Cullen Pipe Band from Co. Cork celebrated its 85th anniversary on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The local community, family and friends travelled from near and far to mark the occasion.

The celebrations also honoured Pipe Major Con Houlihan, who has led the band for 50 years. For over five decades Con has taught generations of beginner pipers, led both the community and competition bands, and played a vital role in keeping piping and pipe band traditions alive in Cullen.

Local bands came out in support and played together through Cullen village. Mallow, Newmarket, Millstreet, Ballingeary, City of Limerick, Killorglin, and Kiskeam Brass and Reed all took part, making the anniversary a memorable day for the village and everyone involved.

In recognition of his contribution, the band and community presented Con with a practice chanter from David Naill & Co., and the IPBA gave him a plaque marking his 50 years as Pipe Major. Pipers and drummers from around the world sent video messages of congratulations. The evening closed with a performance of a tune written by band member Kevin O’Sullivan to commemorate Con’s 50 years in the role.

It was a fitting tribute to Con’s dedication and leadership, and a fine celebration of 85 years of Cullen Pipe Band, its members and the community that has supported it.
